Microscope A+P

Microscope Anatomy and Physiology

Microscope Terms and Nomenclature

Head: houses ocular and objective lenses

Binocular: Tow ocular pieces adjust for your own interpupillary distance

Ocular Lenses: Magnify at power of 10x and are found on the top of the head of the microscope.

Rotating Nosepiece: Revolving Mechanism found at the bottom of the head of the microscope that holds objective lenses

Objective Lenses: Magnify at a power of 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x

Arm: Handle; connects head to base

On/Off Switch

Rheostat: Dimmer Know, controls brightness (light intensity)

Stage: The platform that the slide is placed on.

Mechanical Stage: Lever arm/ apparatus that holds the slide firmly in place.

Iris Diaphragm: Reduces the amount of light by opening or closing.

Light Source/ Illuminator

Axis Controls: Found below the stage; move the mechanical stage in two axis planes

X Axis Control: Moves Mechanical Stage along the X Axis. (Right to Left)

Y Axis Control: Moves Mechanical Stage along the Y Axis. (Forward to Back)

Base: The Bottom of the microscope.

Coarse Adjustment: Large Knob that is used with the 4x and 10x only.

Fine Adjustment: Small knob that is used in 40x and 100x.

Real Image: Projected by the objective lens to the ocular lens

Virtual Image: The Image that is seen by your eye.

Magnification: The ration of the image size to the actual size; (ex: 100x=100 times bigger)

Resolution: Image clarity or sharpness

Total Magnification: Determined by multiplying the ocular lens x the objective lens: 10 x 40=400
